1. Hi! Tell us who you are!
My name’s John Porcellino. Since 1989 I’ve written and drawn the zine King-Cat Comics and Stories.
2. When did you start writing zines? Why did you start writing zines?
I started making zines in about 1983. I’d been making little books since I was a kid, and around that time I discovered photocopiers, so I began reproducing my comics and books and giving them to my friends at school. It would be another four years before I discovered the “World of Zines.”
As to why? I guess I was just one of those kids who was always writing and drawing. From a young age I was also in love with the book form, printed material, so it’s probably just natural that I would gravitate to trying to make my own.
I write mostly nowadays about my own life, everyday moments, past experiences, things that interest me (Nature, spirituality, music etc).
4. How do you think zines are different from other forms of writing e.g. blogs? Why are zines important to you and other people?
I also have a blog, and I enjoy the immediacy of that, and being able to put up photographs simply and in color, but I will always love first the printed page. I suppose it’s the same reasons many others prefer it– I like the tangibility of the paper in your hands, sitting back and relaxing with a good book/zine. Sitting and staring at a screen is not pleasurable for me in the same way that reading a printed publication is.
5. Tell us anything you feel moved to!
